Lump on african grey's cheek

by Frank K
(Philadelphia Pa.)

My African Grey has a lump on his cheek. He shows no sign of discomfort and he eats and acts normal. The lump is hard and is covered with feathers. What could cause this condition?

Lump on bird's cheek
by: The Avian Vet

This could be one of a number of things. An abscess is possible, generally caused by infection; squamous metaplasia is very common in greys, primarily when they are not on a pellet diet. It is also possible that it is a tumor. I recommend that you have this looked at by an avian veterinarian.
