Lumps on tail feathers

I recently aquired a 15 year old scarlet macaw. There are dark lumps running along the quill on the underside of her tail feathers. Can you please tell me what this is? Thank-you.

This could be remnants of the blood vessel that was there when the feather was growing. I recommend that you have your bird seen by an avian veterinarian. This could also be related to poor nutrition, especially if your bird is not eating pellets.

Well depends on how big the lumps are.
You didn't give us enf information. Like size and color.

Please remember, Dr. B cannot assess your bird online as he is not able to examine your bird. An avian vet who is able to examine your bird is your best bet.

However, from what you say, I suspect the bird may have MITES. I feed my birds dried chilis I get from the bird shop. This is al all natural alternative for keeping mites away.

Mites till attached themselves to the stems of the feathers (as feathers do contain blood vessels in them). A vet really needs to be able to see the infestation to be able to prescribe the proper meds.

Avian vets are cheaper than you think. So please consult an avian vet who is able to physically examine the bird.

In the meantime, if you have other birds in the house, keep them seperate from that bird, until you're able to get him checked. We dont want to spread illness or the mites.

Congrats on your newest addition to the family. I'm sure you will take great care of her.
