macaw spinning, biting at her wings
by: Anonymous

My macaw is 30 and has started that in the last 3 or 4 years. She gets NO sun. We (vet and I) think it's itamin D deficiency. I have been taking her outside for an hour, and I am going to order full spectrum lighting for when I can't take her out. I hope to have a positive comment in a couple of month.

My conure would scratch and pick all night as well. She turned out to have an allergy...we never found to what. This would come and go for 2 years. It would often follow a molt. She would scratch herself into an infection. With proper benadryl and antibiotic treatment she was fine for awhile. We missed however that it was a symptom of a more serious underlying problem causing the entire thing.....Egg binding. Very important to see an avian vet. Good luck.

This most assuredly can be an allergic reaction to meds especially if Avian Vet has had her on them too long. You need to contact your avian vet about this because she can die from this and it won't take long either.

Let us know what your avian vet has to say. Hopefully you did take her to an avian vet because dog and cat vets kill birds all the time with incorrect diagnosis and meds.
