Macaws strange behavior

by Melody Bare.

All of a sudden my 20 yr. old macaw has been acting strange. Shredding paper constantly, rubbing his /her beak all over the floor and sides of cage, sometimes even in his poop! He use to love spending time being held, now he just wants to go home to tear up stuff! Will it hurt him rubbing in poop? Will it harm me?

Macaw acting strange

Your parrot may be having hormonal issues, but if your bird hasn't seen an avian vet in the last year or ever, then please make an appointment to rule out other issues. Sometimes birds act weird because they are hurting or sick inside and don't know how to deal with it.

Poop can grow bacteria and give your bird a bacterial infection, so do your best to clean up the bottom of the cage every day. If you don't have a cage with a grate, that keeps the bird from getting to the poopy paper, then invest in a better cage as soon as you can.

Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.
