I have a male and female parakeet sharing the same cage. The male has begun biting and pulling feathers from the female and even pulling her tail feathers out. This behavior has been going on about one week now.Can you please tell me what might be causing this and give some suggestions on how to stop this if it is harmful for the female.Thank you.

Male plucking female bird
by: Tracie

Dr. B has answered similar questions. Sometimes mates will pluck each other and there is not a thing you can do about it but separate them if you don't want it to happen.

A breeder I know has a pair of Jardine's breeders and the male plucks the female's head. The female looks pitiful and I don't know if I could handle seeing my bird be plucked, but this has been going on for years with her pair.

If the bird picks the bird to the point of bleeding, then you don't really have any other option but to separate the birds.
