Missing neck feathers

Our parakeet, Tweety, of about 7 years of age has no feathers around his neck and under his wings. We believe a cage mate may have done it, but we have since removed him from the cage. They have not grown back. Tweety has a new, kinder cage mate. Will they grow back. If it were mites, then the other birds would have caught them, right? Should we try the Pluck No More product. Tweety is as healthy as can be, but looks bad. Thank you.

Yes, you need to take your bird to an Avian vet to rule out any infections and/or parasites.

What sometimes happens to feathers that have been plucked over and over again is they don't grow back in. My male Amazon has been plucked around his neck so many times by his mate that only a few feathers came back in after he and she were separated. If this just started with your birds, chances are good that some of them will come back in.

So, it will be good to talk with vet about his overall condition as he is getting some age on him, and it is very important for the older birds to have a checkup at least once a year to make sure they are healthy and that all is well.

Also, read all the information Tracie spoke of, because the more you can learn about all facets of your birds, the better you will be able to care for them.

Dr B suggests a vet visit for all feather "missing" issues. Only an "in person" exam and talking with you will help a vet determine what is wrong.

Please read our articles on our Parrot Training page. We have a few articles on feather plucking and chewing. Some of the information is repeated, but reading all of them will give you a better perspective on the feather destruction issues.

Since the feathers are not growing back in, it seems that either the bird is plucking the feathers, there is a health issue or both.
