Moluccan chewing until bleeding
by: The Avian Vet

This is a common self-mutilation issue seen in may M2s. This bird is going to likely need surgery, long term antibiotics, and constant nursing care at home. There is no substitute for seeing an avian veterinarian in these cases. You must take her in. This will eventually lead to death if not treated properly. The only thing you can do at home is maybe put on a sweater or some other cover up to prevent this self mutilation, but, that is not going to cure the problem.

Cockatoo biting itself

Dr B will eventually answer this. Warning, be ready to get some "hate" mail for saying you can't take your potentially sick bird to a vet.

First, NEVER put over-the-counter meds on your bird. They can kill your bird, mask the symptoms so that an avian vet has a difficult time determining what is wrong, or can make your bird more sick.

You first need to find out why your bird is doing this. Does it have a bacterial infection? Does it have a tumor? Is it allergic to something you are feeding it or something in your home? Is it behavioral?

Please read the Feather Damaging Behavior article Dr B wrote.

How do you plan on keeping your bird from getting an infection if you refuse to take the bird to an avian vet to treat the sore?

Most avian vets will take payments. If you can't afford payments, then I suggest you find someone that loves birds that is willing to get medical care for the bird when it needs help.

Over the Internet, what I type may sound sarcastic or cruel, and that is not my "tone" when I am typing. I am just answering honestly as an advocate for your bird.
