Muscovy Drake

Duck's poor feather quality

Hi. My Muscovy drake's tail and wing feathers look worn and shabby. The soft parts are missing from the feathers and only central shafts remain on the tail and the ends of the wings. He seems otherwise healthy and the feathers of the rest of his body look ok. I don't know his age. His two girlfriends are sleek and look very good.

Same problem
by: Anonymous

I'm having this same problem with my drake too!
I noticed it maybe two weeks ago, but I think it's getting worse.. I wondered if the females were picking on him, but maybe they need better access to water & sand. Its wintertime here & they've been in a smaller pen for the past 3 months.

by: The Avian Vet

This could be a nutritional problem, external parasites, thyroid disease, ineffective preen gland or oil, or genetic abnormality. I recommend that you have him examined by an avian veterinarian.
