my 1 year old sun conure's weird behavior

For some odd reason my sun conure is sticking its butt in my face with its tail feathers sticking up while we are relaxing on the couch. This started a couple of weeks ago and has become a habit. At first I thought it was funny, but now I'm wondering what the reasoning is. Has this happened to anyone else or is my bird weird?

by: Anonymous

my 3.5 yr old green cheek just started tucking a small toy under her/him and sits on it while preening tummy. is this mating or pretend egg sitting?

Male or female
by: Anonymous

If it has two bones by the tail in between the legs it's a female. If one, male.

Conure, boy or girl

I didn't know if my conure was male or female until spring came and she laid her first egg!

sun conure
by: Anonymous

I have a 6 yr old sun conure I've had for about a week now and she's very sweet with me. She gives me kisses. But I am kinda concerned.....she is constantly rubbing her beck on me whether its my shirt, my shoulder or my face. She let's other people hold her but she has shown aggressive behavior towards others and myself sometimes. She hisses and idk what that means. Plus she's constantly making a clicking noise. What's this all mean

So if my conure is rubbing on me it means a girl right?

Editor's note: No, both our male conures did this too.

rubbing and tail in air
by: Anonymous

Your bird is a female. Tail In the air... next dont let her rub you. She will overbond and see you as a mate. This could lead to aggressive behavior.

tummy rub
by: bre

my conure just turned one in april and is such an amazing boy! he loves his tummy rubbed and loves to shower with me. I have so many questions on him but don't know how to contact anyone for answers. my main question is on his food and cage. what can they not eat and his cage is big and he loves his toys but is there any toy that can harm him?

One Year Later
by: Argel

A year ago I wrote commenting on my green cheek conure´s weird behavior. This spring it began rubbing itself again and ended up laying three eggs. So now I´ve been looking for a male to keep her company and in the mean time I only touch her on the head and neck to pat her and don´t let her rub against me. What I worry about now is will she love me less if I get her a companion male bird?

Editor's note: I do not suggest you purchase another bird, they may hate each other, then you have two birds and the same problem. Yes, if they bond they may not want to interact with you at all.

teeth picking
by: Anonymous

Hi, we've had our green cheek conure, Po-po, for 6 months, and he is 1 yo. He has always been good about giving kisses, but this past week, he started going for my teeth. He will literally try to force his little head through my lips so he can beak wrestle (?) with my teeth! It's kinda cute, but also annoying since he tries to do this anytime he gets near my mouth now. Is this normal, and what does it mean? Is it something I should discourage, or is it harmless? Does he think my teeth are my 'beak'? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Editor's note: discourage it, you don't want to share the bacteria in your mouth with your bird.

Pet conure
by: Argel

My 2 year old green cheek conure has begun to rub itself on my hand or arm. I don´t think it´s funny as I feel it might feel lonely for bird company. It hasn´t laid any eggs though so maybe it´s a male. Should I try and get it a fellow conure?

Editor's note: Getting another bird is not the solution. Please post your question as a new question so others will read it and help you.

Ezra's behavior
by: Anonymous

My Green Check has started acting mean to me and now seems to love my husband a little to much. Normally Ezra doesn't like him and we caught Ez rubbing her or his bottom an my husbands hand. We just got Ez and don't know what sex it is. Is this normal? So I get to look forward to Ez not liking me when ever Ez's hormones act up? I could really use some advise on this.

bird masturbation
by: bailey the conure

yes, my bailey does this too. He is masturbating. He is a 17yo male. He sticks his tail feathers straight up in the air, backs up till his vent is touching whatever he is near (my arm, neck, whatever), then starts making sexy noises, moving his head side to side.

Being that he is a male, and never really gets agressive about it (though it is annoying, especially when he gets in his moods where it is all he wants to do), I don't mind it. It is natural, and I let him do it.

For females, it can cause some egg-laying, which can lead to gravidity, so I think I'd discourage it....but you won't be able to stop it. It's a natural behavior.

i just revieved my nanday conure 2 days ago from a man that has kept it in his garage for 3 years! poor thing! i haven't taken it to the vet yet for its check up and DNA testing, so i do not know the sex of the bird yet; but today it started sticking its butt in my face and wiggling around to!

i've had budgies in the past and realized what it was doing and got grossed out! lol but its a super super sweet bird!

My Sun Conure started doing similar at about 2-3 years old, raising her tail very high in the air and backing up trying to rub her vent area on my hand, face, arm, anywhere she could stimulate herself. We thought it was funny at first until we realized she was being sexually stimulated and eventually started laying eggs and became egg bound, luckily I realized she was egg bound and took her to the vet where she was hospitalized over night and passed the egg, otherwise she could have died.

Do not let her rub her vent (where droppings come out) on you or anything, it can stimulate egg-laying in females and lead to egg binding (inability to pass egg, very serious!) Also try not to touch her tail, lower back on near her vent to discourage masturbation and avoid egg laying.. also don't let her in enclosed spaces, such as boxes, blankets, etc. which can mimick a nesting area and lead to egg laying.

Mine did that the Vet said he may be mating or trying to.
