My 10 week old baby scaly Lorikeet "baby cries" all the time

by Robyn
(Australia)

My 10 week old baby scaley "Baby cries" all the time.
He is clenching his feet off and on when on the perch, do you think he may be in pain?
He is eating during the day on his own but still wants me to feed him before he goes to bed for the night, any advice greatly received.

Regards Robyn

My 10 week old baby scaly Lorikeet

I do not think full weaning is over for your bird much before 3 months old. If this is the case, your baby is hungry all the time. I suggest you begin feeding handfed baby parrot formula in the morning and again in the evening before bed. Allow him to eat regular food during the day. He may not be eating as much as you think because babies play with food as much as eat it. Also offer him organic pellets as weaning food plus the other foods Lori's are supposed to get. There are organic foods here for the Lori's, so you may wish to take a look.

The weaning process is just that. It is a process which takes however long it takes depending on the individual bird involved. Until this one is around 12 weeks or older, continue morning and evening feeds because he is not getting enough food, and is hungry.

There is also possibility of illness, so please have him examined for infections by an Avian Vet in your area. These infections are very common with baby birds who have no immune system developed yet. This can also cause various digestive problems and will not get better until he is diagnosed and treated by an Avian Vet.

Keep us posted and we wish you the best here.

Linda
