My 22 y/o Macaw laying eggs. How do I help stop?

by Cork Friedman

My Blue & Gold "Tequila" is 22, and has just now started laying eggs. the first two within a week, then a month off, and now a third. I've done everything I can think of to curtail her nesting behavior, thinking this would stop the eggs. Apparently I was wrong. What can I expect, and is there a way to help her out of this mode? Thanks in advance.

This points to the possibility of a physical problem like an infection or other problem.

First, take your bird in for a thorough exam by an Avian vet in your area. Have blood drawn for a Comprehensive Blood Panel which will cover all the bases of what could be wrong.

It is very unusual for a bird this age to just start laying all of a sudden with no prior history. Of course, 22 is very young for a Macaw as they can live upwards of 75 years and more. It is just unusual that she would start right now.

Take her to Avian vet, and she should be seeing one every year for a well bird checkup which will catch problems before they become BIG.

Let us know what you find out, and DO NOT ALLOW VET TO GIVE HER ANYTHING LIKE ANTIDEPRESSION DRUGS OR ANY KIND OF SILLY THING LIKE THAT. I heard of that recently, and cannot, for the life of me, figure out WHY a bird, dog or cat would be given anti-depression drugs for any reason in the whole world.

Thanks for writing, and we look forward to hearing what vet has to say about your bird.
