Hi i received an african grey as a gift for christmas and i got the bird for 2 weeks now and the person we bought it from told us that the bird is 8 weeks old so it is now 9 weeks old and he sold us the food as well so i've noticed that for the past 2 days now my grey doesnt want to eat the food that im feeding it and after i feed it my grey throws up a little i want to know if this is normal or should i perhaps change the food?

get help now!!

At this age your baby is incapable of digesting any other food besides baby parrot hand feeding formula. It needs to be syringe fed this 3-4 times a day!! His weight must be monitored on a gram scale every morning to assure weight gain. The feeding formula must be the proper temperature (started at boiling and wisked down to 102-104 degrees F) anything above this temperature will burn your babys crop and anything below will cause bacterial growth and give sour crop. Proper consistency must be made, too thick of formula could continue to thicken in the babys crop and cause crop-stasis which is when it cannot pass and just rots there. Too thin of formula will pass too quickly and baby will not gain any weight or get the essential nutrients. Proper hand feeding techniques must be shown to you because if it is done improperly, the baby could aspirate on the food and suffocate and die. It is a learned skill, not for someone who has never done it before. So i agree with the other comment...this baby (no offense) should have NEVER been sold to you or whoever got it for you this young!!! Either bring it back to breeder ASAP and demand this baby gets properly weaned before bringing him home (which wont be until about 3-4 months old), or get him to an avian vet asap to have them help and show you how to properly hand feed...if it is not too late already. I wish you and most importantly your baby bird the best of luck.

This person should never have sold you a baby as young as that, He needs locking up . Your baby has probably been fed with a syringe and you wont know how tondo that safely. Please find a breeder that can help you . Hope your baby will be ok xx

Baby bird throwing up

You need to find a breeder right away to help you learn how to feed and care for your bird. I also suggest you Find an Avian Vet to examine the bird to make sure it is healthy.

Do not delay, your bird can die quickly if it is not getting enough nutrition or is ill.
