My African grey

by Merete
(Norway)

Hello My name is Merete and i Have an African grey that is picking her feathers, we are giving her lots of atention and toys but when i sit by the cage somtimes she will pick her feathers and i gave her an aloe bath today and now i noticed a bold spot on her wing.

She also likes to pick at her neck, sholders and under her wing. I am soon going to take her to the Avian vet if this does not stop but i would like to try and see if i could do anything at home to stop the problem first. She is 7 years old and i bought her about a mounth ago.

African grey picking feathers
by: Tracie

The problem with birds that pick at their feathers is determining the cause. It could be a behavioral problem, but without an exam and possibly tests, you don't know if it is due to an infection or other illness.

The first thing to do is to Find an Avian Vet to examine the bird to rule out illness. Then if it is from nerves, environment, toxic item(s) in the home or whatever can be addressed.

The avian vet will know what is available there where you live to help the bird, depending on what is causing the behavior.

You can read our Feather Damaging Behavior article written by an avian vet for more information about this problem.
