my baby lorikeet has bugs on it

by samantha

I just found a baby and saw some little bugs popping out around his neck to eat the food that he has dribbled down there. Are these lice? How do I get rid of them?

Lice and mites are not that easy to see, and you need to take him to an Avian Vet ONLY immediately. Find an Avian Vet

If this is lice, your entire family and all pets will be covered with them, so do not delay. Also do not use any over the counter meds as these are poison and will likely kill the bird. I know they sell this poison in pet shops, and it is still poison.

Never treat a bird unless an Avian Vet has done the diagnosing and then given you the meds or you risk killing a bird of any kind. Pet shops do not have your bird's best interests in mind when they sell dangerous products, and the manufacturers of these products do not really care one way or another so long as they get the money from unsuspecting people trying to help their birds.

This is a "Buyer Beware" world, so read labels, take birds to Avian Vets, and make sure all products used in home are non toxic and safe for you, your pets and children. Lots of products sold are dangerous for all the above, so be careful instead of sorry.
