My Bird (Chicken) wont open one of her eyes!

Eye That Wont Open

Eye That Wont Open

Hi, I know my chicken is not a parrot, but I thought maybe parrots have this problem as well.
There is something wrong with my chicken and I have been to see a vet about it. Her neck is all twisted and her face is pointing towards the sky. She still eats and drinks with assistance so we dont want to put her down. The twisting of the neck started with her looking towards the left and this has been progressing over a week. I've now noticed that her right eye no longer opens when she opens her eyes =((

Is there anything I can do to stop this from becoming permanent?

Chicken with twisted neck

Unfortunately this is already permanent. This is caused by poor nutrition or genetics, sometimes a combination of both. It may also be related to an infection and even meningitis. It is also caused by hydrocephalus and trauma. I would have her evaluated for pain, and if she is not in pain, is eating and drinking, then there is nothing you can do. If she is in pain, disoriented, does not eat unassisted, stumbles, cannot escape predators, or is being picked on by the flock, you may want to reconsider your options.

you need to get your bird into an Avian Vet immediately. Dog and cat vets are not licensed or trained to take care of birds even chickens. This could be a poisoning of some sort or some other physical problem. Until she is examined by an Avian Vet, you will not know how to help her.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
