My bird destroys everything, especially the bottom of his cage

by Maegan
(New Zealand)

I have a Green Indian Ringneck. Its about 1year old and seems pretty happy, talks heeeeaps, walks around the house most of the day but he destroys everything he comes across. like those "bird proof" toys - he wrecked them, Food he throws it everywhere- on the floor, at the cats & he chews the cage lawn up into small pieces and same with anything he gets his little feet on. Is this normal? Could it be he's actually a girl & "she's" nesting? or is he bored?
(Im not sure on the gender yet since is only 1 year old)

Bird destroying things
by: Tracie

First of all, I think you are asking for trouble allowing the bird to walk around your home. The bird could chew something toxic, get stepped on etc.

You can stop the bird from destroying the bottom of the cage by purchasing a cage that has a grate at the bottom that separates the bird from the poop tray.

Some bird enjoy chewing and destroying things. You will need to continue to provide safe bird items for it to destroy.

As far as health goes, you need to Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird on a yearly basis to rule out illness. You can also have a DNA test done to determine gender.
