My bird had a red bump on the cere

my baby chepita

my baby chepita

My parakeet has a small bump on her cere and it was not on it yesterday. It has a crust in it and I think that she kinda got hurt on something. If you see the picture, it is on the left bottom side and it has it crust so I think it is healing.

Bump on cere
by: The Avian Vet

I cannot diagnose this from the picture you sent. The differentials include trauma, tumor, and cere hypertrophy. You should have it looked at by an avian veterinarian to be sure it is not serious.

Yes, I can see it, and it looks like an injury. Please run the cage and surrounding area where she plays for anything sticking up or out like a wire or other sharp where she may have done this. Also, keep an eye on it because it may get infected, and you'll have to take her to an Avian Vet for treatment.Infection will look like swelling with possibly pus coming out or not. Carefully check out her complete cage, toys, perches and anywhere outside of cage where she plays. If her wings are not clipped, you'll need to have Avian Vet clip the 6 long primary wing feathers which are the long ones at the bottom or end of the wings and ONLY THOSE. Birds allowed to fly around in the house can get many injuries, and a lot of them will be much worse than this one. They can crack their skulls flying into mirrors, windows or walls. They can get toenails caught in bedspreads, doilies, etc. and pull a nail completely off and bleed to death. Homes are dangerous places for inquisitive little birds.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
