my bird just died

I just brought home a cockatiel and it started coughing. I thought maybe it was imitating me, but then all of a sudden it just dropped dead. What could have happened?

Bird died soon after bringing it home
by: Tracie

Ii am so sorry this happened. Unfortunately the only way to know what happened is if you take the bird for a necropsy. You would need to Find an Avian Vet to determine if this was a disease, infection or something toxic in the cage or your home.

I strongly suggest that you do not purchase a bird from a store or breeder that does not take their birds to an avian vet for exams to make sure their birds are healthy and disease free.

If you find the bird of your dreams, and the person has not taken the bird to an avian vet, then you need to take the bird to an avian vet to make sure the bird is healthy. The bird can bring disease into your home, besides the heartache of losing another bird.

Please make sure you do not use Teflon coated appliances, use air fresheners and a host of other toxic items in the room where the bird is. You can see our Toxic / Non-toxic for birds list for more information on this.
