My budgie has a lump under his wing

The lump developed a couple of weeks ago, it looks more like a large blister. The lump is soft and seems to be filled with fluid. My budgie is eating and drinking and behaving normally and doesn't seem to be affected. His wing now sits proud of his body, it does not appear to be sore or hurting. I can touch the lump and move his wing and it doesn't seem to hurt him. The feathers over the lump have fallen out (I don't know if he did this himself). It seems more like a cyst, should I drain this or does he need to visit the vet?

Lump on budgie.
by: Anonymous

My budgie had a lump on his neck on the top of his wing. It grew so quick and he was a bit sad but still eating. He also lost his balance and could not fly. It spread to his front in about 4-5 days. The wet said he will have to be put to sleep as too old for anything also very much distressed when handled. I said I will bring him back for pts. if he looks suffering. (He was still eating and playing. ) Two days later he had blood coming out of it. He got better. Today the lump is so small.....he is so happy. God he was close to put to sleep. I have never thought this can happen. I obviously thought it is cancer but probably it was an abscess, cancer would of killed him.

Lump under bird's wing
by: The Vet

This is abnormal and should be seen by a avian veterinarian. Do not attempt to drain this on your own.

My budgie has a lump under his wing

Hello and thanks for writing. You need to take your bird to an Avian Vet so the fluid can be looked at under a microscope to see what it is. This is most likely part of a more serious overall infection, so do not mess with it. The Avian vet will diagnose and prescribe meds to help your bird get over the infection.

The possibility is that this infected area has caused the feathers to fall out. Birds cover up when they are sick or feel pain for as long as they can, so the fact your bird does not seem to be in pain in not a reliable indicator of his health.

In the wild, birds have to cover up being sick or injured because a sick or injured member of the flock will bring predators. The other flock members either drive the bird out or kill it outright. Parrots of all kinds are NOT domesticated and behave as their wild ancestors behaved. Even your little Budgie is wild at heart, and the covering up when they are ill or injured is built into them from birth.

Let us know what the Avian Vet has to say about what this is. Have a safe and wonderful Holiday Season!
