My caiques wings are going black

by Adam Wilkinson
(Uk)

My 11 year old caiques wing feathers are losing their green colour and going black in some places. Is this normal or should i be worried?

My caiques wings are going black

Dear Adam, I would take your bird to an Avian Vet and see if there is an underlying physical issue going on here. Your bird could have a low level infection or a problem with thyroid, so I suggest a blood panel consisting of testing the kidneys, liver, thyroid and parathyroid. A CBC will also be a good idea.

If all appears good from Avian Vet, then this may be a dietary issue. If your bird is not eating a high quality organic pelleted diet, then there is a lack of nutrition here. ZuPreem and several other lower quality brands use dyes, sugar, preservatives and end up with pesticide/fertilizer residue in the food and are bad for your bird. Sugar and chemicals that taste like it are addictive, and birds will eat this food instead of what is good for them. You can find organic pellets here, and I'll give you a link to article written by Avian Vet about how to go about the change. Make NO changes until your bird has been examined by avian vet.

Write back when you can with what avian vet found as your information can help people with same or similar issue. We appreciate you writing us, and look forward to hearing from you again!
