my canary is loosing feathers

hi, dear madam/sir
i hope you can answer my question, i have a canary( female) and a male, for more than one year, about a year ago, the female started to lose feather , 1st the tail than the chestand the neck,than the head, it is almost like abold eagle , the only part that is still left is the wings(also not fully covered, and some on the back), i thought it was a a disease but the male is still healthy( not contaminated), and if it was a disease, shouldn't killed it till know
i appreciate ur answer.

Hello and thanks for writing. The Avian Vet will answer this when he has time, and I wanted to suggest that your male may be stripping your bird of her feathers.

You will need to remove one or the other into another cage which means having two cages. As I said, the Avian Vet will also answer this with his thoughts, so please wait for that. Go ahead and separate the birds though because since he still looks healthy, this appears to be a case of female being plucked by the male which does happen with canaries and finches.

This could be a non-contagious or even contagious disease even without the male showing symptoms. It could be a nutritional problem, parasites, genetics or many other possibilities. You need to take her in to see an avian veterinarian immediately.
