Canary losing feathers

my canary has been scratching his neck and has now lost feathers from around his neck. They are not growing back. damaged feather follicles maybe? Now hes scratching other parts too. i'm sure its not mites, because i've tried the mites spray and it seems that my bird is in pain when sprayed with. Plus i dont even see any mites on him. i dont have any avain vets, where i live. can u suggest some anti-biotic that i can use to cure my birdie? i've tried spraying aloe-vera on him.didnt work. i need help!

If you cannot find an Avian Vet in your driving area, then call the Vet Medical Board and find out where one is. You have to be willing to drive a ways if necessary or find homes for your birds. Anyone who has birds also has to have an Avian Vet within driving distance because birds get sick or injured sometime during their lives and will need these services.

As Tracie said, the mite spray has made this problem worse because you don't even know if bird has mites or not until Avian Vet does a thorough exam. Bird could actually die from being sprayed with this toxic mess.

Please do your best to find an Avian Vet because this bird will die if left untreated. If you cannot find an Avian Vet anywhere near you, then do not have anymore birds because they need the services of an Avian Vet. The avian vet is a very large part of having birds of any species.

There isn't an over the counter medicine that is safe for birds. Mite spray can kill birds. Anything greasy will get spread all over the body when the bird preens and can cause the bird to lose body heat.

Please use the links at the top of our Find an Avian Vet page if there is not an avian vet listed near you on our list. Dr B can not help, because he would need to examine your bird in person. He can't prescribe medication over the Internet either.
