Cockatiel with sore over eye
by: The Avian Vet

No there are no over the counter medications that are safe for any bird in any situation, ever. This is a problem that needs to be seen by an avian veterinarian as soon as possible to prevent your bird from losing sight in that eye.

You need to make an appointment with an Avian Vet in your driving area immediately as this needs to be addressed as quickly as is possible. DO NOT USE ANY OVER THE COUNTER MEDS, AND THIS INCLUDES THOSE FOUND IN PET STORES. Also, do not use any home remedies as all these can make problem much, much worse. What your bird needs is a doctor for birds so she can be properly diagnosed as to what type of problem this is. It could be a virus or a bacterial infection or even a fungal infection, and all of them are treated differently. Diagnosis first and THEN treatment as Vet prescribes.

All new birds should go to an Avian Vet as soon as they are brought into a new home as they usually have some kind of infection or other from the stress of moving and if they were not taken care of properly in their last home. Your bird needs your help in getting well, and you have to take her to a trained, licensed Avian Vet to do that. Do not take her to a dog and cat vet as they ARE NOT LICENSED to treat birds and usually make matters worse for the bird while charging you money better spent with an Avian Vet.

Let us know what the vet has to say and thanks for writing and asking for help. It shows you care about your bird, and we appreciate people like you writing to us.
