If you cover your bird's cage, because you stay up late and the bird needs to sleep, then I suggest you purchase a travel cage for the bird to sleep in instead. You can put the travel cage in a dark room that is quiet also for the bird to get some rest.

Other than covering the cage due to blocking out the light, you don't need to cover the cage. I doubt the bird is ingesting the material, but it can get strings wrapped around itself and injure itself in the night.

Another alternative, if you really feel your bird needs to be covered and stay where it is at now, is to put a large piece of wood or metal on top of the cage underneath the cover. That would keep the material out from the cage so that the bird can not reach the material.
