My Cockatoo has had a hard ring around his right eye

This material originally circled Bogie's entire eye

I wasn't able to obtain a solid answer from my avian vet so I thought I would post a picture of Bogie's eye to see if anyone has seen this condition before.

See attached image.

Thanks

Follow Up Dx

I just returned from the University of Florida, and they feel there is a good chance that this is Psittaacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD). Lab work has been collected and Bogie's January CBC will be used as a base line. Also, Bx samples are being sent to the University of Georgia to confirm the presence of circovirus.

They hope they are wrong, but don't believe they are.

I'll post as things progress.

Hard rign around cockatoo's eye
by: The Avian Vet

This could be from an injury or it could be an infection. I would need to look at it and culture it for a diagnosis.

My Cockatoo has had a hard ring around his right eye

Dr B will eventually answer this, but my advice is to go back to your Avian Vet and have them do a test on the material around eye if they have not done that. Also have basic bloodwork done to see if any problems show up.

Make sure you pin the Avian Vet down as to what this could be, and it will take some testing to rule in or out certain things.

Also make sure this is not the result of chronic injury from rubbing face on something too rough or sharp. This would include any sharps on cage bars where powder coat was allowed to dry into sharp points instead of being smoothed out as it dried. Sometimes where bars join cage have sharps. Toys can also be a problem as well as any sharpa on perches. Manzanita is bad for the sharp places where twigs were pulled off. These have to be sanded down.

If your Avian Vet seems to not to want to help you, find another one who will. This has a cause, and finding out what it is is their job. Don't use any home remedies or over the counter meds for it because until you know what you're dealing with, it cannot be treated.

Keep us posted,
Linda
