My double yellow-headed amazon making strange sounds

I have a five year old double yellow-headed amazon that has started making a gasping almost grunting sound within the past couple of months. (Also flaps wings and acts disoriented at the same time) Started out as maybe once a week, now it happens 2 to 4 times a day. Could somebody please tell me what I'm dealing with?

Well, it is difficult to know exactly what you're talking about, but your bird could be sick or has learned new sounds--hard to say.

If he has not seen an Avian Vet in over a year, it is time to take him for testing to rule out infections, parasites and have some basic bloodwork done to rule out problems with organs or other problems that will show in blood.

It is important for birds to see an Avian vet at least once a year, and it becomes critical as they age. Birds can be victims of some of the same physical problems we face as we age.

If he does have an infection or something else wrong, you will catch it before it takes him down if you go ahead and go to your Avian Vet. Once a bird gets way down with an infection, it takes a lot of work, money and commitment to bring them back to health.
