Kwazy, eclectus parrot

Why does my electus parrot keep throwing up on me? Just me, He doesn't do it to any one else in my house. I have read up on it some and it says that it is because he loves me very very much. Ok, How can I get him not to do it? He does it every time I pick him up..It's really gross and doesnt smell very good. But I don't want to quit holding him..What can I do?

Editor's note: Take your bird to an avian vet ASAP! Find an Avian Vet

In the future, if you want people to see and answer, you need to post a question, not an answer here to another question, at Parrot Questions

he loves you!

Its throwing up because it loves you. That's weird, I know, but I have an African Grey, and he does the same thing. Birds mate for life, and as awkward as it sounds, the bird thinks your his mate.
Parrots regurgitate food for their mates, and pet parrots will often apply this behavior to a human they consider a potential mate. Whenever this happens, do not shout or get upset. Calmly and gently say, "No thanks." Then put the bird in his cage and deliberately turn your back on him, then walk away. Give him some alone time before getting him out again. It may take a while of doing this, but eventually your parrot should take the hint. You may also need to avoid excessive scratching and nuzzling with your bird, which he make take as encouragement to continue mating behavior.

eclectus throwing up

It sounds like your bird loves you. I own an eclectus myself and notice my bird does this for me sometimes as well as to her favorite toys. You can always take your bird to the vet, but if your bird still plays and eats all like normal, you most likely have nothing to worry about.

This is NOT normal, and the smell is the tell here. Your bird may very well be sick, and you must make an appointment with an Avian Vet in your driving area to have him checked out by an Avian Vet.

It is normal for a bird to regurgitate for the people they love and they will even do it to favorite toys, but when there is a lot of it, and it smells then this is signs of an illness that if left untreated will kill your bird. There are various viral infections that will cause a bird to be unable to digest food, and if you are seeing any undigested food in the throw up, then your bird is very sick and needs immediate medical help.

So, instead of being upset with the little thing for possibly being sick, please get him into see an Avian Vet as soon as is possible. Take him ONLY to an Avian Vet as dog and cat vets are not licensed or trained in the care of birds and other exotics like reptiles and will either do nothing or give the wrong meds in the wrong doses and kill your bird. Always take birds to Avian Vet who is also licensed and trained to diagnose and treat other exotics animals as well.

Eclectus parrots need a lot of attention as they have emotional makeups similar to the larger parrots like Macaws and Cockatoos. They stay babies longer, and the normal regurgitation imitates Mother birds giving their babies crop milk. This does not sound normal though, so take action and let us know what Avian Vet has to say about it.
