My female tourquiose conure breathing funny

My female tourquiose conure is not even a year old, but I got her in December. Ever since two days ago, she started to breathe funny, and when she does, you can hear it. My friend told me that my bird was "in heat". Thanks!

First, allow me to clear up a misconception your friend has. Birds DO NOT HAVE HEAT CYCLES AS THEY ARE NOT MAMMALS. Birds have entirely different ways of showing a readiness to breed, and your bird is most likely too young for that anyway. You need to read and study about your bird and parrots in general so you know all you can about your bird. This is not optional, but mandatory, learning, and is the only way to understand your bird and how to take the best care of it.

YOUR BIRD IS SICK AND NEEDS TO BE SEEN BY AN AVIAN VET IN YOUR DRIVING AREA AS SOON AS IS POSSIBLE. It sounds like she has an upper respiratory infection, and if left undiagnosed and untreated will go into full pneumonia, and your bird may die.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU NOT WAIT ANY LONGER TO TAKE HER INTO AN AVIAN VET. MAKE SURE VET IS AN AVIAN VET LICENSED AND TRAINED TO TREAT BIRDS. DOG AND CAT VETS DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING WITH BIRDS AND USUALLY MAKE MATTERS WORSE THAN THEY ALREADY ARE.

You can find Avian vets by looking in the phone book, online or possibly by calling your dog and cat vet. There is also a link here on-site to help you find an Avian vet.

Please understand that your bird's situation is bad and will get worse if you do not take her to Avian vet. Infections have to be first diagnosed to see what kind of infection it is, and then proper medications have to be prescribed by vet and given by you. DO NOT USE ANY OVER THE COUNTER MEDS, EVEN THOSE FOUND IN PET STORES, AND DO NOT USE ANY HOME REMEDIES. The only help for a sick bird to get well is to be taken care of by a licensed, trained Avian Vet.

Even if you have to drive a ways, you need to be ready to do that for your bird's sake. This is all part of having a bird for a pet as they rely on us to help them since they cannot help themselves.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
