My green cheeked conure, who bites.

by Anonymous

My green cheeked conure bites me when I want him to step up on my hand. But he steps up on my arms and my shoulders with no problem. He also flys to me with no problem too. When i want him to step up on my hand he just gives a big bite. Why does he only bite when I ask him to step up on my hand?

I really have no idea why he bites you when trying to pick him up with your hand. What I DO know is that you need to start training him to step up using a perch until he does it automatically and then use your hand. Also, keep bird off your shoulders because some serious injuries to eyes and face can occur from this vantage point. I speak from experience, so start training him to stay off shoulders.

His wings need to be clipped as well. Fully flighted birds do not have to become completely tame because they can just fly away from you when and if they decide to. Have an Avian Vet clip the 6 long primary flight feathers at the ends of each wing. Do not allow them to cut up any higher as this cripples birds and causes chronic pain. Just the 6 long feathers on the ends of each wing will allow bird to glide gently to floor and will not allow enough lift to fly all over and get hurt.

You might look at the Parrot Training page for more ideas.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
