My Hard Head Parrot

Every time I open my parrot's cage door, I say "perch the baby" and I put my hand inside, he bites the cage and sticks out his foot and puts it on my hand. Then he jumps onto my hand and he can't keep balance so he bites me to keep balance but it tears away my flesh. SO WHAT SHOULD I DO TO TEACH HIM TO PERCH ONTO MY HAND.

Helping your parrot perch
by: Tracie

Many birds will grab your finger or hand as they work to get a grip on you to step up. I have heard of several methods but the one that I use is to make a high pitched screech, like a bird that just got hurt, to stop nipping and unintentional biting.

This has worked for us, I hope it works for you.

If you need to, you can teach your bird to step up on a perch instead or wear a driving glove instead. It might take your bird getting used to these items, so be patient if you try them.
