My lovebird past away yesterday 7/17/11

by Tammy
(Florida)

My lovebird died yesterday. Before she died she was panting really hard and her eyes closing. I have a bird cage that stays outside. It's has a roof and in the shade. I keep a bowl of water, food checked on a daily basis. She died before I could get to a vet. I can't figure out what happened? I don't use water bottles so she had as much water as she could possibly get and plenty of food. Please help I want to understand why this has happened.

Bird kept outside died

First, Dr B can not tell you why your bird died without doing a necropsy. It could be anything.

I am confused that you say you don't use water bottles, so she had as much water as she could get. Water in a Lixit water bottle will last for days and stay free of bacteria, and water in a dish can be bathed in, splashed out and full of bacteria within a couple of hours.

If wild birds can land on the cage, they can transmit disease to your bird.
