Lovebird Pancho before attack

Lovebird Pancho before attack

Today my lovebird Pancho was outside in his cage. We usually do this every day in the morning, and nothings ever happened, but today my dog somehow opened the cage and got Pancho. We found Pancho alive but all his tail feathers were gone and most of his flight feathers, and he was covered in mud.

Nothing appears to be broken and he is behaving normally, but will his tail feathers grow back? And what should i do going forward, apart from not leaving him outside?

Yikes!! Please keep an eye on your bird. They have hollow bones, and your bird could be injured even though you don't see it from the outside. It may need a visit to an avian vet.

Moving forward, as you say, make sure you are with the bird when it is outside or around other pets. You are fortunate a snake did not eat your bird before this.

We know of two different people that hung their bird cages outside on their porch, only to find a snake in the cage a few minutes later. One bird was a medium large bird too! Snakes can squeeze through very small spaces.
