My lovebirds rectum falls out when she poops

by Aisha
(Norway)

Hi, my lovebird could not poo for a couple of hours - when she would press to get it out, her rectum would stick out, but then go back in, without any poo coming out. But she is eating and drinking water and is very active. And also now she is pooing somewhat normal - but it is still more fluid than firm poo. Now two weeks have passed, and I saw today, while pressing, trying to poo, her rectum was halfway out - but went inside again. I am really worried.

I live in Norway and there are no bird vets here - whom can offer a soulution to this problem. So I hope you can help.

Lovebird with potential nutritional problem
by: The Avian Vet

This is not normal and needs to be seen by an avian veterinarian. There is not a treatment I can recommend at home. But you bird should be eating a pellet diet since this could be caused by a nutritional problem.

Unfortunately, your bird is very sick and will die without medical services from an Avian Vet.

Call around to the vets in your area and see if they can recommend an Avian Vet they know of. Do not allow a dog and cat vet to treat your bird as they will most likely kill her. If one of them has some experience with birds, then take her to them.

Your bird is going to die without some help, and there is nothing anyone can do to help you over the internet. Sick birds have to be seen in person because there are different types of infections, and your bird's will have to be diagnosed and treated accordingly.

I highly recommend people not get birds for pets who do not already know of a close Avian Vet. This is cruel to the birds because all of them can get sick or injured and need an Avian Vet. I'm not saying this to be mean or anything negative. I'm simply stating a fact. Birds will, at some time, need an Avian Vet, and if a person cannot provide that for them, then they need to get a cat or a dog for a pet and leave the birds alone in my opinion.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
