My male budgie slammed into a wall...?

by Ashley
(Florida)

Hi. I had my male budgie out about an hour ago with my two cockatiels, and he got startled and flew into the kitchen. I heard a loud thump and saw him standing on the top of my cabinets, so I'm guessing he hit his head. He was fine, he flew over to me, then flew back to his mate, and was acting normal. He chirped and bobbed his head at his girlfriend, doing what he normally does.

However, when I picked him up again to see if he was okay, there seemed to be a red split down the middle of his cere. He doesn't seem like he's hurt, he just seems normal. I'm just really worried this might be an issue. Will he be okay? There's no blood... It's just like a little kid when he's bust his lip.

I just need to know if I need to take him to a vet? (I'm trying to save it for complete emergencies... Just a little check-up for them costs over $60.00!)

Thank you!

Bird flew into wall

There is no way for Dr B to determine if your bird needs medical care or not without examining your bird. Birds have hollow bones that are easily broken and injuries can easily become infected.

I strongly suggest you either prepare a room in your home that is a bird safe room, or have all the bird's wings clipped for their safety.

Allowing your birds free roam in your home is very dangerous. Even the metal on your ceiling fan may be toxic. Birds land on things that fall on them, chew things toxic and get stuck in places and lose their lives every day due to people thinking they are safe because they have been flying around for years just fine.

Keep a close eye on your bird that was injured, and if you do not have an avian vet, Find an Avian Vet now and keep that number on your refrigerator or somewhere you will have it for an emergency.
