My male dove is acting strange

by Taraya

For some reason my male dove is acting very weird. He keeps putting his tail up in the air, pointing his face down, cooing loudly and twitching his wings. I would like to know if this is normal, or if it's something I should have checked out.
Some other information is that we got him recently, along with his female cage mate. He gets at least an hour of exercise a day, and he is fed premium seed.

My male dove is acting strange

Hi there and thanks for writing. Actually, this sounds a lot like the breeding/mating behavior of female parrots! I'm not that familiar with Doves, and it could be the mating behavior of Male doves as well.

If you are planning on allowing them to breed and/or already have a nest set up in their cage, I recommend you take both birds to an Avian Vet in your area to make sure they are free from bacterial infections. The reason this is critical before starting a breeding program is that if the parents have a infection, the babies will also have an infection and will possibly die as the babies are not strong and have undermined immune systems to begin with.

So, hopefully you don't have two females here, and all I can recommend is to look up some information on the internet about breeding behavior in Doves and see what they say. That is where you can find some breeders who know way more than I do about the doves. All I know is that I love them and have just never had any except the little Diamond Doves and never bred them.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
