My Nanday Conures Feathers Are Turning Brown

by Zachary
(Michigan)

I just noticed tonight that my nanday conures feathers are starting to turn from green to brown. We went through a big move and he has been a little out of his normal self. I have never seen this and am wondering what may be wrong with him? Please if anyone has any info let me know.

My Nanday Conures Feathers Are Turning Brown

The only time I've seen this is in birds being fed low quality diets. There was much stress involved in the move for your bird as they do not like change and like everything the same as it helps them feel safe. So stress compounded by a poor diet is a recipe for sickness which has to be diagnosed and treated by an Avian Vet.

This is probably more related to diet than the move though. All parrots need to be eating a high quality diet of orgnic pellets plus 10-15% snacks in the form of organic veggies and/or fruits or Birdy Bread mix which Harrison's makes as well as the pellets.

If your bird has been constantly fed an all seed diet, then he is slowly dying of malnutrition because all seed diets even with fruit and veggie additions or vitamins are still very low quality diets, and the first place to show problems will be the skin and feathers.

Here is an article, written by an Avian Vet, about how to go about the change from seeds to pellets as it is not done quickly and takes time and patience.

Switching Birds to Pellets article

It would also be a very good idea for an Avian Vet to examine your bird because malnourished and/or stressed birds tend to contract infections easier than their better fed counterparts. Make sure your bird is seen only by an Avian Vet, and you may have to drive a ways depending on your location. Be willing to do this because having birds means already knowing where an Avian Vet is as birds get sick or injured and will need an avian vet at some time or other.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
