My Older D-Y-H Amazon is very oily on his back and top of wings..???

by Amber V
(California)

I have rescued a 30 yr old D-Y-H Amazon, and he is very oily on his back and on top of his wings, doesnt seem like he is able to preen well? His diet and droppings are healthy, he is not plucking himself. Just when I touch his back instantly fells like I touched a candle. Any idea what is going on ?

I tried spraying him with warm water and that didnt seem to provoke anything, I guess I will try to give him a full shower? Any opinion or advice is appriciated, there are not many avian vets where I live.

Amazon with oily feathers

If the bird is oily, then you really do need to Find an Avian Vet to take your bird to. Being a rescue, you need to make sure it doesn't have a disease or an illness anyway.

Water is not going to get rid of oil, and the issue may be an illness or a disease and showering the bird will only add to the stress the body is in and may make the bird worse.

Avi-x Bird Rain is a product you can use on birds, but again, it the bird is ill it will not do any good.
