My parakeet has red spots on his cere.

by Candace Cooper

My parakeet is less then a year old, and i believe he is a boy, as his cere has had a tinge of blue to it since I bought him. This morning I noticed some red spots on his cere and also something that looks to be like peeling... I was wondering if anyone would know if the red spots might just be from irritation from the peeling or if this could be the start to a more serious issue. Thanks for your time.

Parakeet with red spots on cere
by: The Vet

This could be an infection, or it could be from colored food on the cere. The peeling may be normal, but with the presence of the red spots could be abnormal, too. You should take him in to see an avian veterinarian.

The red spots are not normal and could be a parasite or infection/injury of some kind.

Since your bird is new to your home, please take him to an Avian Vet in your area so they can check him out for infection and/or parasites.

All new birds need to go to an Avian Vet shortly after we bring them home as moving to a new home is stressful, leaving them open for infections or parasites.

Thank You for writing, and be sure he goes to see an Avian (bird) Vet and not a regular vet. Regular dog and cat vets are not licensed to treat birds and will do more harm than good.
