my parakeet is getting weak!

by Belinda

for a while my parakeet would make these peeping sounds and my other budgie would feed her, well, regurgitate it. its been going on for two months or more. now she seems weak. i noticed she slept a lot and now she has to grab a perch to get on it or grab the cage -all this with her beak-. the male bird seems to not let her eat at all so we put another container near her. she eats but nothing has seemed to change. she used to be the strongest out of both and she was actually the dominant one. also she would get hot a lot in the summer so we put the swamp cooler on she was still hot. but she was liike this since last year. now she sleeps alot but she just isnt the same. all this happened in less than two weeks. what's wrong with her?

my parakeet is getting weak!
by: Linda

As Tracie said, your bird is dying, so get her examined right away. Also, get rid of the "swamp cooler" because this is causing a damp draft on the birds which will kill them.

If you do not have air conditioning in your home, open windows and use a regular floor fan to move the air around. Do not put birds in path of fan or on or under any ac vents as all of these cause drafts which cause birds to become drafted leading to pneumonia which may be what your bird has.

So, to recap, get female to vet, separate birds into two cages which should have been done way back at the beginning of them being together. Stop using the swamp cooler because it will kill birds. It's bad enough when people keep their homes too cold in the summer. Birds have to be kept at around 76F during the summer and at least 71-72 in winter. Too much airconditioning will kill all the birds in residence as will too cold a home in the winter.

Your bird still has a chance, but not for much longer.

Weak parakeet needs an avian vet
by: Tracie

You need to separate them, and make an avian vet appointment for her. If you do not have an avian vet, then please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find one.

Dr B can not help you over the Internet because he can not examine your bird nor prescribe a treatment.
