My parakeet is sitting on the bottom of its cage.

My parakeet is about a year old or younger. About 2 days ago, it started to scratch it's beak a lot on the perch. It keeps opening its mouth but not the way parakeets usually yawn. It seems like somethings bothering him/her. Now it just sits on the ground with it's head tucked in its back. He/she has stopped chirping and it's droppings look liquidy and black. It still eats but I haven't seen it drink water lately. What could be the problem?

Take sick birds to avian vets
by: Tracie

Hello Giorgi,

Our vet does not want us to send him questions when a parrot is seriously ill and needs in person treatment immediately. He can not treat your bird and it will just delay it getting help.

Your bird is seriously ill and needs to get to an Avian Vet ASAP. Until you get him there, keep his cage partially covered and warm. If you are unsure where to take him, look in the phone book and call a bird breeder or store and get their recommendation.

If you bird pulls through this, make sure he is on a pellet diet and not a seed diet. An all seed diet will cause liver and/or kidney failure in birds due to the high fat content and the lack of exercise.

I pray all will go well with you and your bird.
