we just got out parakeet about a month ago....It seems like the bird has never been touched by a human or have had little interaction with one. He won't even let us tocuh him nor come out of his cage. What can I do to make him feel more comfortable?

Taming and Training
by: Linda

Tracie has some bird training material on her Parrot Training page, so you will need to look at it and learn how to interact with your new bird. If your bird has not already been to an Avian Vet in your area, you must take him in to check for infections, parasites or other problems. New birds tend to get sick because their personal stress level is high when moved to a new home with new people, cage, perches, toys and food.

Feed an organic pelleted diet and a few fresh veggies. Feed NO table foods as these are high in fat, have sugar and salt. Sugar and salt will poison a bird, so do not give him people food just food that a parrot is supposed to eat.

Do not begin any training until an Avian Vet has cleared your bird from infection or internal/external parasites. Once he is pronounced healthy or has taken medicine for any infections, then you can begin his taming and training. Use the material out here, and you will need a good book about your Budgie. Tracie has some good ones out here. Do your homework, take bird to vet and feed the proper diet, and you will have a happy, healthy bird who enjoys playing with you for years to come.
