My parakeet is sick--chews cuttlebone excessively
by: CheeChee

Hi--My female parakeet is 5 years old and a couple of weeks ago started showing signs of illness. She has been having diarrhea and has her feathers fluffed out all of the time. She has also stopped talking--very seldom vocalizes at all and also does not play anymore. She excessively chews on her cuttlebone. Her beak doesn't appear to be too long so is their a deficiency of some kind? She is still eating and drinking.I also noticed something weird with her cere. It was always the tan or brown of the female but has turned blue. She also is constanly sleeping with her head turned and tucked into her feathers. We live in an area where there are no avian vets available. Any ideas?

You will need to Find an Avian Vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.

I noticed my king parrot fell of the water bowl, was purched there a while. Looks like she has a lump under her beak, swollen chest. She is eating a little. I cant afford to take her to vet i am on pension, it makes me sad.

Editor's note: many vets take payments.

My Budgie has red swellings around his eyes and is sleeping all day and hardly eating. His droppings are also loose. Can anyone help me find out what is wrong with him?

cold house
by: lori

I keep my house cold because the heater dries out the air and we live in a very dry climate. I bought infared heat panels for the day time as well as heated perches which they love. I also bought the thermostate for the heat panels so they aren't on unless the temp goes down. My birds love them.

Cold or Sick Parakeet
by: Linda

If your home is cold, the heater should help. A cover for the cage will also help. Make sure the heater is not too close to him, and make sure it is electric. Gas heaters are dangerous for birds and people.

I'd cover cage with a light colored material, and you can leave front open so he can see everything.Make sure top and sides are covered, and ALWAYS COVER YOUR BIRD AT NIGHT, EVEN THE FRONT.

This shaking can also be sign of illness, so make an appointment with an Avian vet in your are and take him in for a checkup. Birds get sick just like we do, only they won't get well without the care of a doctor trained to help birds.
