New parakeet not eating or drinking
by: Tracie

You need to measure a very small amount food and water to put in the cage and then leave them alone for a few hours. They may not eat or drink in front of you, but you can come back and see if they have eaten or drank.

Also, put a white paper towel under the grate to keep up with their droppings. As long as they are pooping, they are eating. ;-)

If you did not get the EXACT same food they are used to eating, then contact the breeder or store where you purchased them so you can get what they are used to. Most places do not feed healthy diets, so you will likely need to convert them to a healthy pellet diet.

To convert your birds to a healthy diet, please read our Switching Budgies To Pellets article and get them on 60% high quality pellets and only 40% healthy treats, and seed is included in that 40%.

If your birds have never been seen by an avian vet, then it is possible that they are not healthy. A breeder that doesn't take their birds to an avian vet is just in it for the money and doesn't care if they have healthy birds. If you need an avian vet to examine your birds, you can use this Find an Avian Vet link to find one.
