My parrot's sex

by parrottaker

Hi, I have read that if my pinky finger fits perfectly in my parrot's abdomen (i think that's how it's called...the part between my parrot's legs and tail) is female, so is she female?

My parrot's sex

What you are doing is no more or less than nonsense! Bird species, where the male and female look alike, have to be sexed using a DNA test. Young birds are impossible to tell with in most cases. Sometimes in sexually mature birds, you can see behavior that can tell you whether you have a male or female. Since I don't even know what kind of parrot you have, there is no way to know.

Your bird can be taken to an Avian Vet, and they will take a drop or two of blood and send it off to a lab for analysis. If it is not that important to you, I wouldn't get the test as the DNA testing is usually expensive. If, however, you have not already taken your new bird to an Avian Vet for a checkup, you will need to do this right away as new birds tend to contract infections because of all the stress involved in moving and adjusting to a new home and family. Only take your bird to an Avian Vet as they are the only ones licensed and trained in caring for birds.

Thanks for writing,
