Umbrella cockatoo in heat
by: Russell

I have a 10yr old umbrella cockatoo and he is in heat.
So he is always trying to push,so we had to get him surgey so that they could put the insides back in there and so it up 20% more.

But my question is How can you break a bird that is in heat that is forever trying to push?

Any idea's reall need your help.

Birds do not come into heat. They are very different from mammals where there is a regular cycle of being receptive to breeding. Birds can breed anytime they feel like it. Their little mating dances can be done just for you to enjoy, and it does not necessarily mean they want to breed. Our birds like to show off for us!

I've found a good method for sexing Toos that are somewhat older, like 4 or 5 years old maybe younger, but I don't think so. The male Too has a solid black eye or iris. The older female Too has red in her eyes or iris, and this is a sure fire way to tell. Now, all babies have the very dark eyes, so you must wait a few years to tell.

What the tail thing sounds like is a stylized mating behavior where male gets stiff, stands as tall as he can, walks stiffly with tail feathers spread and some tail shaking. His eyes will also do what is called "pinning" which is the pupils getting larger and smaller very quickly. It almost looks like they are "winking" at you. So, you may have a male if his eyes are black, black, and he is doing the mating dance.

Hope this helps shed some light on the subject.
