My white cockatiel has a large smelly lump on her back.

by Chelsea

I got this cockatiel a week ago and she has this lump on her back that the last owner said was there for several months and she also got her with the lump. When I took her to the vet, they gave me three different answers on what it was and then wanted to do surgery on her. They said the surgery may kill her and if it doesn't, the lump may come back. I don't know what to do. Does anybody have any idea what is wrong with my bird and how I should help her? Thank you.

Make sure the vet you are taking her to is an AVIAN VET ONLY because a dog and cat vet WILL kill her. Only Avian Vets can diagnose and treat birds because they are the only vets licensed and trained in caring for birds.

As for how long this poor bird has been suffering with this horrible thing, I cannot imagine why the other people did not take her to an avian vet. This is called severe, uncalled for neglect, and thank you for getting started on getting her well. Just take her to avian vet because they will be able to help you with this. You did not specify where you took her, so if you took her to avian vet then you may wish to find another who will actually diagnose this before resorting to surgery. Sounds more ilke what a dog/cat vet would say.

Find an avian vet immediately and get this very sick bird who is in a lot of pain in for an exam. This may be an infection that can be drained. If you go to an avian vet, you may not have to have surgery on her. Sounds like you took her to a dog and cat vet, and that's what they do with birds, kill them. Your bird is suffering more than you have any idea, so please get her to the correct vet who will tell you what, exactly, this is and how to go about treating it.

Let us know what avian vet says about this and I hope it is resolved soon because your bird is in pain and very sick.
