by Richelle S
(toronto, ontario, canada)

i just noticed one of my budgies nails is getting dark at the tip .... i dont know if this is because its dirty or about two months ago the tip of his nail broke and was bleeding (but it stopped bleeding after a minute or so) but i cant remember which nail it was ... if it was this one that is now getting discoloured is there a problem??

Keep a close eye on this nail, and if you see it moving upward, then this is a big problem. You will then have to take him to an Avian Vet so they can examine the nail and the bird.

If it continues to turn black, this could mean the original injury that broke the nail could have become infected, and this could cause the nail to rot along with the toes and feet if left untreated. So keep an eye on it to see if it moves up the nail or stays the same.

Also make sure you take your birds to an Avian Vet for nail clipping when necessary because nails that are too long and have sharp points on them are accidents waiting to happen.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
