Nanday constantly ruffles feathers and is losing some.

by Angel
(Florida)

I just brought my nanday conure home and within a few days he has been ruffling his feathers every few minutes so they are always up and I am notiving they look abit thin, he seems to be losing a lot of them. He keeps preening his chest feathers and im a little worried he might be sick or something, is this normal behavior?

Bird ruffling feathers
by: Tracie

Dr B can't tell you if your bird is getting sick, because he can't examine your bird. A bird that sits fluffed up all the time, certainly indicates illness.

Your bird needs to see an avian vet, if you did not take the bird for an exam before bringing it home. The vet will not only check for and treat any illnesses, but he should also vaccinate your bird.

If your bird is losing feathers, but you can't see on it's body where they came from, then it is likely molting. If you see bare spots, then your bird is either ill or plucking them.

I hope all goes well at the vet. Let us know what you find out.
