Nanday conure feather loss

by Heather Hartwig
(Glendale AZ)

I have a nanday conure aproximately 10 yrs old. he has lost all his feathers under his right wing and it looks like he is starting to lose a small amount on the front neck area. Is this common, can I do anything to help him, and if I need a vet where should I take him I live in glendale AZ I have a ferret that had adrenal disease that I cured with information on line and all his fur is back I did not want him to undergo surgery and now he does not have to.

Vets in az....
by: Anonymous

I can say I have'nt run into a bad vet yet..and because I have moved around az a lot an have animals they have seen the vets. I too prefer herbal remedies, but only when it comes to me. Birds are So sensitive I could never take that chance with my sun conure. Your best bet is a avian vet for your bird, I am happy your ferret is better, good luck.

Conure with feather loss
by: Tracie

I understand wishing to solve this problem without spending money on an avian vet, but I do not know of any other way to care for your bird.

Dr B can not give you advice on this, because he can't examine your bird to determine the cause. If he suggested something for one thing, and it was not what is wrong, the real problem will just keep getting worse and maybe become fatal.

You can look and see if there are any avian vets recommended by our readers on our Find an Avian Vet page. There is also a couple of links to other websites that you can do a search on.

Many avian vets take payments, if money is an issue.

Please read the Feather Damaging Behavior article written by an avian vet. And if your bird is not pulling out his feathers, then this may even be more serious.
