I am the PROUD new owner of a 4 year old black hooded Conure. When I brought the bird she was as sweet as can be to her owner, however when I got her to my house she would NOT let me take her out her cage and she will lunge forward to bite me.

I am not able to even try to grab her without her lunging forward to bite me, WHAT AM I TO DO , I wanna love this bird and be the BEST bird owner ever, however she wont let me near her!!! SHE WILL EAT APPLES FROM MY HAND inside the cage < but WONT let me pet her at all....HELP

You are not alone

I just purchased what I was told was a sun conure, he is not. He is 7 years old and bites everyone, especially men. I have only had him two weeks and make it a point to spend time with him everyday. He is starting to come out of his cage and fly to me. He climbs my pant leg to get to my shoulder. He is so out of shape that everytime he flys he is breathing so hard I can hear it when he is on my shoulder. I am seeing progress....from one newbee to another, just give him time and let him know you are not going to hurt him. He has gone from biting me hard to a much softer pinch.......I still don't like it but we are working on it. Good Luck

nanday conures
by: Anonymous

I ADOPTED A NANDAY CONURE ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO. HIS PREVIOUS OWNER WAS NEGLECTFUL AND EVEN ABUSIVE(HE BURNED THE BIRD WITH CIGARRETTES AND FED HIM ALCOHOL)

ANY WAY...NEEDLESS TO SAY HE WAS REALLY FRIGHTENED OF ME WHEN I GOT HIM HOME. HECK...I WAS FRIGHTENED OF HIM!!

I KNOW ABOUT THE "LUNGING" AND HAD BEEN BIT MANY TIMES BEFORE I LEARNED TO STOP PUTTING MY HAND IN HIS CAGE. (I'VE SINCE GOTTEN OTHER CONURES THAT DON'T MIND ME PUTTING MY HAND IN THIER CAGES BUT I RARELY EVER DO. I'VE LEARNED THAT IT REALLY IS THIER TERRITORY. SO I JUST DON'T DO IT )

WHAT I DID WITH MY NANDAY WAS PUT HIS CAGE RIGHT NEXT TO MY DESK. WHEN I'D SIT DOWN TO GET ON MY COMPUTER I'D OPEN HIS CAGE DOOR. I LET HIM, IN TIME, COME OUT ON HIS OWN. EVENTUALLY HE'S WALK AROUND, STEAL MY PENCILS, CHEW PAPERS ETC WHILE I SPOKE TO HIM IN A QUIET VOICE. AFTER MANY MONTHS HE DECIDED I WAS OK ENOUGH TO CLIMB UP ON. NEXT THIN I KNEW HE'D CLIMB UP ON MY SHOULDER.(I TRIED NOT TO SEEM NERVOUS) HE'D PREEN MY HAIR. SOMETIMES HE'D FALL ASLEEP UNDER THE BACK OF MY HAIR.

MIND YOU, THIS DID TAKE MANY MONTHS TO GAIN HIS TRUST...BUT IT WAS SO WORTH IT IN THE END. NOW HE'S MY BEST BUDDY. HE TAKES SHOWERS WITH ME. HE SHARES MY SANDWICHES AT LUNCH TIME.HE GIVES ME KISSES AND SAYS I LOVE YOU MOMMA.(AS WELL AS A MORE COLORFUL VOCABULARY...THAT I'M SURE HE LEARNED FROM HIS PREVIOUS OWNER ) :0(

I'D SUGGEST DOING SOME THING SIMULAR. YOU MAY WANT TO HAVE HIS WINGS CLIPPED AT 1ST. LET HIM COME OUT TO YOU. I WAS MUCH MORE FAMILAR WITH DOGS FOR YEARS AND HAD DONE RESCUE/FOSTER CARE. GETTING A DOG TO TRUST YOU IS SO MUCH EASIER, I THINK, THAN A BIRD. WITH TIME, CONSISTANCY AND LOTS OF LOVE, YOU COULD END UP HAVING A TRUE BEST FRIEND THERE!! GOOD LUCK. CATHY D.

CONURE HELL
by: Gene N.

Buying pre owned birds that have already bonded with other other people is never a good idea in my opinion..it's like taking a child from it's parent's...it will take time but it will happen be patient...next time you buy a bird i suggest you buy a hand fed baby and i assure you your bird expierience will be more enjoyable...

biting conure
by: Anonymous

I have 2 conures it took a year for these little guys to stop biting, if you react to the birds they will continue to bite some birds don't want you in their cages forever, when they come out they are sweet but finger chase inside their cages...good luck birds are awesome

Hope this helps

Hi there !! well I dont know much about conures, but I'd say that she needs time to settle in her new surroundings. Keep giving her apples or anything else she will eat, as you do and keep talking softly to her, and I'm sur that in time she will come around. She is probably disturbed by the change she has just gone through. Hang in there.:)
